Air quality offset programme for the Zondereinde smelter
Northam, undertook an air quality offset programme in Smashblock, a community near the Zondereinde Smelter. The goal of the air quality offset programme is to reduce PM2.5 and PM10 emissions in Smashblock.

De Berg Nature Reserve: South Africa’s 30th Ramsar site
De Berg Nature Reserve, which forms part of the Booysendal offset area and is managed by the Buttonshope Conservancy Trust, has been declared South Africa’s 30th Ramsar site under the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance.

Taskforce on nature-related financial disclosure
Northam supported the development of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosure (TNFD), and the subsequent Mining Sector Guidelines, by participating in an ICMM convened, analytically supported PGM mining pilot through the TNFD Beta 0.3 and 0.4 frameworks.

Elandskuil Bridge

Health and wellness through sport
Physical activity in a fun and relaxed setting not only bolsters physical health, but also provides a healthy emotional outlet for stress. At Northam, we see sport as an opportunity for our employees to bond outside of work, fostering team cohesion and morale. All of our mines – Eland, Booysendal and Zondereinde – have soccer, netball and athletics teams that engage in friendly competition. Eland and Zondereinde also have rugby clubs.

Masego Ntyenyana – a lesson in workplace safety
In 2023, the South African mining industry achieved its first fatality-free month, influencing Eland’s safety initiatives. These efforts aim to create a culture of individual accountability and safe production. Despite these efforts, slips, falls and material handling incidents still occur.
