In 2023, the South African mining industry achieved its first fatality-free month, influencing Eland’s safety initiatives. These efforts aim to create a culture of individual accountability and safe production. Despite these efforts, slips, falls and material handling incidents still occur.

Explosives Issuer Masego Ntyenyana, who joined Eland in 2021, suffered a finger injury on 18 July 2023 while unloading a jackpot, despite wearing full PPE, conducting a risk assessment and adhering to safety protocols. This incident highlights the importance of completing tasks thoroughly and adherence to Section 23 of the MHSA, which allows employees to leave unsafe working conditions.

Eland supported Masego during her recovery, providing healthcare, transport and mental health support. Masego advises employees to always be present in the task, practice Section 23, wear full PPE, conduct risk assessments and complete tasks thoroughly.
