As a transgender woman in the mining industry, Tanya Greyling has faced significant challenges and scrutiny. At eight years old, Tanya realised she was different, but it took years to live the life she wanted.

At eight years old, Tanya realised she was different, but it took years to live the life she wanted. At 39, she transitioned, resulting in losing her job and family. “I came to a crossroad: either transition or end my life,” says Tanya. Fired from her previous employer for using female toilets, despite medical documentation, she faced severe discrimination.

Years later, Tanya found inner peace after transitioning. Though her journey was filled with tears, both happy and sad, she emerged stronger. “It’s a hard life, one I don’t wish on my worst enemy. It takes a brave person to walk this path. But if I had to do it all again, I would,” explains Tanya. She is grateful for the support of Rita, the love of her life, who stood by her during challenging times.

Tanya appreciates working as an electrician at Zondereinde, where her diversity is embraced by colleagues and the company. She encourages those on similar journeys to stay strong and true to themselves, finding it worth every insult and tear to achieve inner peace
