Northam has contributed some R14 million to the renovation of education infrastructure at three schools in the Eastern Cape.

The three schools – Sichwe, Emyezweni, and Mbotyi in Lusikisiki – now have newly refurbished administrative and teaching facilities, restrooms, playgrounds, and security fencing thanks to a public-private cooperation between Northam and the Eastern Cape Education Department. The schools were selected for this upgrade programme due to their deteriorating physical conditions and lack of adequate water and sanitation facilities. By contributing to the infrastructure, Northam has made a proactive contribution to the outcome of quality teaching and learning for close on 1 500 learners.

Many migrant mineworkers in South Africa’s mineral-rich northern provinces have long called Lusikisiki and neighbouring towns in the Eastern Cape province their rural homes. The Eastern Cape province currently accounts for 7% of Northam Zondereinde’s labour force.

Northam’s involvement in Lusikisiki and the rural Eastern Cape is based on the company’s assessment of labour-sending community development programs and is supported by our dedication to abide by the law and the South African Mining Charter.
